How much time is wasted trying to long in to a university or high school network? When a problem arises and you just can’t log in, how terribly frustrating is it? How often is the network ‘down’ or under maintenance? The iPad really could be the end to these problems but also an end to networks in their entirety. The reason for this is because an iPad could hold all the apps that a learner would need for a day/week/month/term or even whole semesters (heck, maybe even years) work.
There could even be a comprehensive reduction in the involvement of a technician in providing the technical support many schools need with their technology. So instead of this there could, theoretically speaking, be a remote server that works in specific sync with a schools curriculum.
Too often teachers are over reliant technicians for everyday issues due to the over complicated nature of some technology. Due to the fact that some technologies are just too complicated to get a grasp of, many teachers rely on technicians for minor, everyday issues and this is a bane of the days efficiency.
The iPad really doesn’t need much maintenance (pretty much none at all in most cases) and installing apps is simple, rapid and uncomplicated. There is pretty much no need for technical support, the only problem that would arise is when a new iPad owner is learning the new way of doing things. This is a really important factor because this deems the teacher and school in charge and in control of their technology.
This could also mean that there’s no need for ICT suites anymore. Too many schools take their technology and place it in a dark room, where just the look of it makes you feel that it’s inaccessible. Think of a dark, windowless room that is locked up half the time or is under constant supervision, the supervisor then sets a timetable as to who can use the computers.
And then children are shepherded in large groups, in and out of these rooms, or form lines in the corridors making the current users nervous about the time lapsed on the computer they’re on. So in this way, technology becomes compartmentalized and is effectually segregated from the school in general and so cannot really become a part of the school at all.
The scope for apps written solely for teaching and learning and the enhancements for these is huge! It’s a totally blank canvas. Developers can work in unison with educationalists and advisors to create new and cutting-edge software which can meet the needs of the learner and the expectations in technology. The iPad is, in its essence, a solid, tangible and engaging handheld device which could completely transform the way young people learn, making it easier to comprehend new information and giving them a rounded, comprehensive overview of a new subject.
